Modern volunteer programmes give you the chance to visit some of the most unusual places in the world: wild nature reserves, ancient museums, archaeological digs and even marine reserves. We have put together a list of five international platforms  where you can become part of a global movement for good.

Wildlife conservation with Volunteer World

Where: in more than 70 countries around the world

What to do: care for animals, help in rehabilitation centres, participate in observations and research.

Why you should try it: you won't just see elephants, turtles or leopards — you'll be involved in preserving their habitat.

The Nature Conservancy - helping to protect the planet

Where: United States of America

What to do: Support environmental research, assist in forest restoration, conduct environmental tours.

Why you should try it: If you are studying in the United States, this is an excellent opportunity to travel and participate in real projects that aim to contribute to positive changes in the issue of climate change.

Earthwatch Institute - science for nature

Where: Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Costa Rica and more

What to do: help scientists collect data on the state of soils, oceans, rare animals and climate change.

Why you should try it: it's a combination of adventure and scientific mission. Volunteers live on expeditions, work side by side with researchers and see the real results of their efforts. Participation in the programmes is paid.

AIESEC - global volunteering for young leaders

Where: more than 120 countries around the world

What to do: participate in social, educational and environmental projects. Help children, support start-ups, teach English or conduct training on sustainable development.

Why you should try it: it's an opportunity to combine personal development and cultural exchange. AIESEC programmes are designed for students and young professionals who want to travel with purpose and develop their leadership skills.

Goodsurfing - volunteer trips around the world

Where: Europe, Asia, Africa, South America

What to do: search for environmental and cultural projects that match your interests, from farms to nature reserves.

Why you should try it: the platform helps you find a project that suits your personal goals, whether it's working in an eco-village, helping out at a festival or participating in marine research. Volunteers live on site, learn and help communities directly.

International volunteering is about travel and experiences that teach responsibility, care and interconnectedness. You return home with the realisation that your contribution, however small, is part of a larger global picture.
